Preventive Dentistry

We believe that preventive dentistry is the foundation of healthy smiles for life. This is why we promote regular exams, dental cleanings, and periodic x-rays along with a good oral hygiene routine at home. Our suggestions are in line with American Dental Association recommendations.

Most of us have had a cavity at one time or another. However, a good oral hygiene routine at home and visiting our dental office regularly for exams and cleanings are great preventive steps to help reduce cavities. If you’re prone to cavities, you may benefit from fluoride treatment and dental sealants.

Recommendations for Home Prevention

We recommend brushing and flossing at least twice per day and avoiding sugary snacks and beverages. It’s also important to visit our  office regularly for exams and cleanings.

If you notice oral health changes between visits, you should always call to discuss the issue or schedule an exam. We want to treat small issues early before they turn into bigger and costlier problems.

For optimal oral health and to lower your risk for tooth decay and gum disease, the American Dental Association recommends the following:

  • Visit the dentist twice per year for cleanings and exams, which include cancer screenings.

  • Allow for periodic x-rays that can spot potential issues early.

Remember, even the best brushing and flossing routine at home will not remove stubborn bacteria and tartar, which can lead to cavities and gum disease. Our trained hygienists pick up where your toothbrush leaves off.

Following your dental cleaning, we recommend asking our hygienist for the best tips to use at home, too. The joint effort between our team and your at-home routine is the perfect combination for a healthy smile. Additionally, patients who follow these recommendations tend to have fewer cavities and better outcomes.

Customized Prevention for Your Needs

If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease or are prone to cavities, one of our dentists or our hygienists may recommend a custom treatment schedule, more advanced dental cleanings, sealants, fluoride rinses, or a more specific at-home oral hygiene routine.
